Popularity of internet chat
Chat software is gaining more and more users everyday. What used to be a trend has now become a mainstream. Employers are now incorporating chat into the office for their employees to communicate with one another. Additionally, at home, people are using chat to connect through social networking sites.
Facebook is a very popular social networking site. It was originally invented as a site to help college students connect with their friends. When it first started several years ago, users had to have a university email to establish an account. However, as the popularity of the site increased, it opened up to the public. Now, all ages can create Facebook pages to connect with their friends.
Recently Facebook launched Facebook Chat, so that people would be able to communicate with their friends in real time. As opposed to waiting for someone to read your message or post, now, you can converse with the person in real time. The chat feature allows the user to see who is online at the time and have conversations with the person. It is perfect for quick dialogues. There is no installation of software necessary. Instead, the chat bar appears in the lower bottom of the browser. In addition, no "buddy list" needs to be created as friends will automatically be shown in chat. If a user wishes to not chat, they have the ability to go "offline" so other users cannot contact them while they browse the site.
The White House has used Facebook chat as a communication tool. The Obama administration has embraced social media as a way to interact with the citizens. They hosted a "Stakeholder Meeting with Physicians" to debate healthcare policy. The White House says to expect similar events in the future as they want the people to be a part of government.
Embraced by the youth of American and the government, online chat is an important communication device. Many companies are now using it to offer information to prospective clients or customer service to current clients. In a fast paced society, value is placed on getting information as quickly as possible. People appreciate being able connect with others in real time. It is safe to say that chat has transcended the trend stage and is here to stay.
